They hide in the most remote corners of a small island on the eastern coast of Sicily. The men of this tribe combat the extreme heat by lathering themselves with the prodigious arancino oil. They traditionally dance the ancient dance of Glifo, the sacred quadruped, and gather in cool caves to devote themselves to graphic design on rocks. When they stay in one place, they live in traditional huts made from pencils and computer mice.
The legend goes that Alpheus, son of the god Ocean, fell madly in love with the nymph Arethusa while watching her bathe nude. But Arethusa did not return his feelings, and becoming tired of his attentions, she asked Artemis for help. The goddess wrapped her in a thick cloud, turning the young woman into a spring on the island of Ortigia in Sicily. Alpheus, madly in love with Arethusa, asked his father Ocean for help. Ocean, convinced by Alpheus’ sincere love, opened the waters of the Ionian Sea and allowed him to reach Sicily. Arethusa, convinced by such love and insistence, gave in to Alfeo’s advances. Artemis, to seal their love, dug a cave under the spring, so the waters of Arethusa and Alpheus would run together forever. Even today the “Fonte Aretusa” in Siracusa remains an enchanted place, bestowing fertility, hope, and happiness on the young couples.
